Manolo Nuñez: Kidnapper

On Sunday, February 23rd of 1958, 5-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio “el Chueco,” the top Formula 1 racer, was kidnapped by the 26 de Julio Guerrilla Movement at Havana’s Lincon Hotel as an act of propaganda to raise worldwide awareness about Fidel Castro’s and the guerrilla’s struggle, who intended to put an end Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship.
Manolo Nuñez was one of his “friend-kidnappers,” who suffered from poverty and a lack of opportunities since his childhood, and who driven by his yearning for change and justice in Cuba joined the 26 de Julio movement, and together with other comrades, weapon in hand, kidnapped Fangio.
I was lucky enough to enjoy the company of Manolo Nuñez, who offered me his friendship and a heroic account of the way in which the Revolution, under the leadership of Fidel, started to change the history of Cuba.
